More Momentum in the Race to Succeed Senator Tom Duane

NEW YORK, NY – Democratic State Senate candidate Brad Hoylman kicked his campaign for progressive reform into high gear by announcing the support of hundreds of community leaders. Hoylman is running to succeed Senator Tom Duane, who is stepping down from his seat representing parts of the West Side, East Side and downtown Manhattan.

“I’m so grateful for the support of so many distinguished community leaders and neighborhood activists from every part of the district,” said Hoylman. “It’s a sign that the people I have worked with for nearly two decades are rallying around our message of progressive reform for our communities.”

The local activists and leaders endorsing Hoylman praised his commitment to reform and his record of getting results on community issues:

“We have served with Brad Hoylman as fellow Community Board Chairs and have witnessed firsthand his dedication, commitment and outstanding service to the neighborhoods he represents,” said Julie Menin and Dominic Pisciotta, former chairs of Community Boards 1 and 3. “As fellow parents, we know that he will keep the needs of New York City’s youth and its schools very much in mind. We are delighted to endorse him in his run for State Senate and know that he will be a stalwart fighter for the needs of his constituents and a powerful voice in Albany.”

“We have two new public schools coming online in the district thanks to Brad’s efforts,” said District 2 Community Education Council Chair Shino Tanikawa. “Working with local public school parents and elected officials, he spearheaded efforts to raise awareness about school overcrowding and the need for a new middle school and elementary school in the neighborhood. I know Brad will continue to fight for our public schools if he’s elected to the State Senate.”

“Brad has a longtime commitment to preserving and creating affordable housing,” said Chelsea Tenant Advocate Michael McKee. “He began his nonprofit legal career building affordable housing, was a board member of Tenants & Neighbors and recently helped establish a $1 million legal defense fund for rent regulated tenants. Brad will be a strong voice for tenants in Albany.”

“Brad helped reform our community boards by creating new standards for selection of board members, rooting out conflicts of interest, and instituting continuing education for members,” said Community Board leader and Stuyvesant Town resident Mark Thompson. “We need this kind of reform-minded approach in Albany.”

The full list of community leaders whose support is being announced today is listed below.

Brad Hoylman has been a Democratic grassroots activist for over twenty years. He is the former Chair of Manhattan Community Board 2, a position to which he was unanimously elected three times. Brad also holds the position of Democratic District Leader. He is a Trustee of the Community Services Society of New York, the city’s leading anti-poverty organization, and is a former board member of the Empire State Pride Agenda, Tenants & Neighbors, Class Size Matters and Citizen Action. He is also a parent. He lives in the Village with his longtime partner, David, and their 20-month-old daughter, Silvia.

The 27th District includes Greenwich Village, Chelsea and Clinton/Hell’s Kitchen, as well as parts of SoHo, NoHo, the Upper West Side, Midtown, the East Village, Alphabet City, Stuyvesant Town-Peter Cooper Village, Waterside Plaza and Phipps Plaza.
